At a time when the federal government needs to rein in its reckless spending habits, the House instead passed a two-year $2.3 trillion budget agreement. This agreement, reached by House and Senate Leadership and the Administration, eliminates the budget caps – the one fiscal restraint on Congress – and increases spending by $320 billion with minimal offsets.
The crisis at the southern border demands congressional attention and action. Last week, after months of political rhetoric, we finally took an important step to provide critical funding necessary to address the humanitarian crisis. While I am pleased that Congress acted, the road that we took to get here is concerning given what was hanging in the balance.
Once again, House Democrats chose to pass legislation that has no chance of becoming law rather than sitting down with Republican colleagues in search of real solutions. The Senate will not touch this bill, and the President has said he would veto it even if it were to reach his desk.
Today, the House will vote on H.R. 5, the so-called “Equality Act.” I believe that all people are equal and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of their sexual orientation. That said, the bill we are going to vote on does not successfully achieve this goal.
