Tonight (2/14/19), the House held a vote on a hotly debated government funding package. I voted no, and here’s why:

Just this week, the federal government surpassed $22 trillion in debt. Only in Congress would this news be immediately followed by passing a budget-busting bill which in no way even attempts to get our fiscal house in order. When all is said and done, our annual deficit for fiscal year 2019 will be roughly $900 billion dollars. Washington has a spending addiction, and there seems to be no cure in sight.

To make matters worse, funds dedicated to securing our southern border were limited to $1.375 billion, a fraction of what experts say is needed and of what the President rightly requested. There is a humanitarian crisis at our southern border, and Congress is more concerned with playing politics than taking it seriously.

There are good things in this bill, but not nearly enough to justify voting for it. My team and I did our best to comb through the over 1100 pages of the bill today, but at the end of the day, this package does not secure our border, and it does not even attempt to rein in federal spending.

Voters in SC-04 didn’t send me here to vote for legislation like this.
