Rep. Timmons Votes No on Irresponsible Budget Deal

We are nearly $23 trillion in debt and have no plan to stop this irresponsible spending. I was pleased to see the Administration try to work with the House Democratic majority to ensure that the military is adequately funded, but other than that, there were not many positives about the bill.

At a time when the federal government needs to rein in its reckless spending habits, the House instead passed a two-year $2.3 trillion budget agreement. This agreement, reached by House and Senate Leadership and the Administration, eliminates the budget caps – the one fiscal restraint on Congress – and increases spending by $320 billion with minimal offsets.

We cannot afford (literally) to ignore this crisis any longer. In that vein, I introduced legislation today with Rep. Jimmy Panetta which would mandate all future budgets considered by Congress include a debt to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratio. This common sense reform will make it clear just how critical our debt problem is. Currently, our debt-to-GDP ratio is 78%. After today’s budget deal, it will be 97% in 2029.

I was unable to support the deal that passed in the House today. It is past time for members on both sides of the aisle to come together, make tough decisions, and work in the best interest of the American people.
