Timmons Statement on Budget Reconciliation Resolution
Washington, DC,
February 3, 2021
Today, the House of Representatives passed H. Con. Res. 11, a shell FY21 budget resolution which paves the way for Democrats to move forward with a partisan COVID-19 package without being subject to a 60-vote threshold in the Senate. Congressman William Timmons (SC-04) opposed the resolution and released the following statement: “Just weeks ago, the Biden Administration was calling for unity and bipartisanship to bring our country together. However, my Democrat colleagues are now ignoring that call by pushing through a budget resolution that will set the stage for a partisan COVID-19 relief bill costing nearly $2 trillion, which contains numerous provisions unrelated to the pandemic. Including a raise to the minimum wage and bailouts for mismanaged state governments is neither unifying nor bipartisan. “In December, over $900 billion in additional relief was passed by Congress and signed into law. We have yet to spend billions of those dollars, including the money allocated to safely reopen our nation’s schools. To tack on another $2 trillion when we still have money to spend is reckless and irresponsible. We need to help those who are still struggling due to the pandemic, but it must be with thoughtful and targeted legislation, not partisan wish lists and blank checks.” |
