Timmons Bill to Ensure Secure and Competitive Global 5G Networks Passes House

On Monday, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed Congressman William Timmons’ bill, H.R. 5698, the Promoting Secure 5G Act of 2020. This bill requires all countries seeking any financing from international finance institutions, such as the World Bank or International Monetary Fund, for any purpose to prove their 5G network is secure.

“5G technology has the power to revolutionize the way we live and transform the global economy,” said Rep. William Timmons (SC-04). “But there are malicious actors, such as Huawei, a Chinese-based company with direct links to China’s Communist Party, that choose to exploit this new technology in developing nations and even among our allies. H.R. 5698, the Promoting Secure 5G Act, is a good first step to ensuring every nation conforms to the standards of the global economy and ensures a level playing field. I thank my colleagues from both sides of the aisle for their support, and I am proud to see this legislation one step closer to being signed into law.”
