Congressman William Timmons (SC-04) introduced the SNAP Fraud Accountability Act, legislation to strengthen accountability for fraud and abuse in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and protect taxpayer dollars.

Under current law, violations of the Food and Nutrition Act involving benefits valued at $5,000 or more can trigger criminal penalties. The SNAP Fraud Accountability Act lowers that threshold from $5,000 to $1,000, ensuring those who deliberately defraud the program face consequences.

“SNAP exists to help Americans who genuinely need assistance putting food on the table, not to provide an opportunity for criminals to steal from taxpayers,” said Congressman William Timmons. “The SNAP Fraud Accountability Act makes clear that if you deliberately defraud a program funded by hardworking Americans, there will be consequences.”

Timmons has made combating waste, fraud, and abuse across the federal government a central focus of his work in Congress. The SNAP Fraud Accountability Act builds on those efforts by strengthening enforcement of existing federal law and holding those who abuse taxpayer-funded benefits accountable.
